Melaka City, Malaysia - Eating Out Along the Melaka River

Several heritage buildings along the Melaka River have been converted into restaurants and cafes with outdoor options facing the river. It's a short walk from the old Dutch Quarter and once you reach the walkway along the river (behind the heritage buildings), you will see some tables and chairs. Foods and drinks here target the tourist crowd and therefore tend to be overpriced. Then again, you are paying for the view.

Melaka City, Malaysia - Eating Out in Jonker Street

Jonker Street's most famous dish is chicken rice ball, and may ask the difference between the traditional chicken rice? There isn't, except the rice is shaped into a ball but diehard fans will strongly argue the difference! There are a number of restaurants serving this signature dish and if the queue is long then rest assured it must be good, whatever the argument.

Another specialty here are the restaurants specialising in Baba-Nyonya dishes, a blend of Chinese and spicy Malay cooking that has its origins in Melaka. If you have a sweet tooth, then don't miss Melaka's famous pineapple tarts from the bakeries. Friday to Sunday night, Jonker Street turns into a pedestrian mall with street stalls offering a bewilderment of tasty dishes.

Melaka City, Malaysia - Eating Out in Melaka City

There are plenty of places for eating out nearby Melaka's historic quarter, where the Dutch Stadthuys and Portuguese A'Farmosa are located. Places that first come into mind are the nearby Dataran Pahlawan and Makhota Parade shopping malls. Choices include American fast food chains (if that is what you are missing), restaurants, cafes and food stalls at the food courts.

Jonker Street is the place for Chinese chicken rice and dim sum as well as spicy Baba-Nyonya dishes. Expect long queues at the popular establishments here. The Newton Culture Food Village comprises of Chinese food stalls offering a variety of cheap eats. Prefer Western but not fast food, there is Aldy Hotel located a short distance from the historic quarter.
