Gambir Station is the largest and main train station for long distance travel, serving Executive Class (air conditioned) and Business Class (non air-conditioned) trains travelling as far east as Surabaya. Another is Pasar Senen Station, serving Economy Class (non air-conditioned) trains but unsuitable for tourist travel since the trains are slow and have poor facilities.
The 3-floor Gambir Station is located on the eastern end of Jakarta's Merdeka Square. I was warned of pickpockets, scams and touts at Gambir but personally did not encounter any problems. Besides the ticket counters, facilities here include a few small shops, local coffee shops and ATMs. If arriving at Gambir, there are taxis waiting on the east side of the station.
