Jalan Besar in Singapore literally means 'Big Street' in English but believe the precise translation is 'Main Street'. Jalan Besar borders Little India and the southern end of the road is a short distance from Bugis Junction, a popular tourist spot in Singapore.
The roads branching off from the Jalan Besar are interestingly named after British and French generals during WW1 such as Dickson, Kitchener, Beatty and Petain. Along the side of Jalan Besar bordering Little India, are a number hostels for the budget traveller.
