The area in Singapore known as Bugis was once settled by Bugis seafarers from Sulawesi centuries ago. Later immigrants from China settled in the area and from the 1950s to 1980s, Bugis Street was a red-light district well-known for its bars and transvestite prostitutes. Back then it was a popular spot with foreigners and US military on R&R during the Vietnam War.
The colourful days of Bugis Street are long gone, when the government sanitised and redeveloped the area beginning in the mid-1980s. The heart of Bugis is still a lively area but nowadays occupied by respectable-looking shops, restaurants and street markets. It remains a popular destination with tourists and Singapore's younger crowd but today for different reasons.
