Most of the beach resorts in the Langkawi archipelago are located on Langkawi Island, which is the main and largest island. In my opinion many of the better (may not be the best) beaches in Malaysia are on this island. Some of the beaches here have become commercialised but not over-commercialised compared to Pattaya in Thailand or Bali in Indonesia.
Don't expect any sleazy nightlife in Langkawi. There are no go-go bars and local girls in hot pants waiting for pot-bellied tourists. The most popular beach destinations are Pantai Cenang (Cenang Beach) followed by the nearby Pantai Tengah (Middle Beach). No problem about finding a resort or budget accommodation in the area as well as shops and restaurants.
